4-Day Unique Wine Encounter: Barossa and Adelaide

Expert Guide

MEET YOUR STORYTELLER – Invina Wine Guru Jane Ferrari

Jane Ferrari is famous for taking the Barossa wine story across Australia, and the Australian wine story to the world in her trademark high octane ‘infotainment‘ style. She’s a qualified winemaker, an official Baron of the Barossa (a rare honour), has trotted the globe for Yalumba, worked for legends like Rockford wines as well as being the ‘2012 Australian Wine Communicator of The Year’. She’s an unmatched storyteller, a couple of days of rummaging around the Barossa alongside Jane will leave you with stories for a lifetime.

Invina is Australia’s only specialist wine tourism operator run exclusively by wine production leaders, who will give you privileged ‘insider’ access to their rarefied world.

Itinerary:

This first-of-its-kind trip is the launch of our partnership with fine wine tourism specialist Invina who provide the alchemy that can only be achieved from genuine behind-the-scenes access.

The Barossa is Australia’s most renowned wine region, famous for its magnificent wines ranging in style from blockbuster reds to ethereal and aromatic whites. Experience the culture of the Barossa, its people and its wines and take home the stories of a lifetime on this encounter, guided by famous local storyteller Jane Ferrari, supported by wine production insiders and experts Nick Dry and Darren Oemcke.

Jane, Nick and Darren have unparalleled connections with the people of the Barossa and so while we can’t guarantee the appearance of winemaking royalty, don’t be surprised if some appear to say ‘g’day’.

Day 1: (The First Families of the Barossa)

We will pick you up from Adelaide Airport and drive to the Barossa in style, just in time for a pie or pastie (from the legendary Apex Bakery) and a glass of vintage sparkling on Mengler’s Hill overlooking the breathtaking Barossa Valley. A relaxed start to a whirlwind three days of local experiences, exceptional wine and gourmet food.

It's a family day, with Jane taking you to her old haunt at Australia’s oldest family-owned winery Yalumba for a tour of the museum wine cellar, followed by a tasting of their rare and fine wines matched with a local charcuterie platter.  The ‘insiders’ theme continues in the afternoon, as Jane takes you deep behind-the-scenes at the iconic Henschke family wines for a tasting of their distinguished wines.

Accommodation is at the Barossa’s most exclusive ‘The Louise’, which is part of the Baillie Lodges group, known also for Capella Lodge, Silky Oaks and Longitude 131˚.  The Louise has recently undergone a ‘multi-million dollar glam-over' and offers guests a ‘stylish escape’ in their private villa-style suites. You will be spoiled by exceptional service and sublime surroundings.

Dinner is a very short stroll from your rooms at one of Australia’s finest dining experiences, Appellation restaurant.  We have been working closely with management to organise a culinary experience that will set a new standard in food and wine matching.

Day 2: (The big guns)

We are not travelling far today with all the activities just a stone’s throw from the accommodation. After breakfast you have a choice of relaxing at the Louise or going for a walk over the road to visit the award-winning Seppeltsfield Road Distillery, to meet the team and learn a little about the art of distilling (and taste some gin!)

After a gentle start, we will literally get in the dirt! A soil pit tasting with '2019 Gourmet Traveller Viticulturist of the Year’ and consummate communicator Nick Dry, who will take us into the vineyard to see what’s underneath the vines of the Barossa‘s famous Western Ridge.

Next, we’ll be head a little further up the road to the incredible Seppeltsfield village, where Jane is back on board for a tasting of your birth year, followed by lunch and matching wines at FINO restaurant. You’ll also have time to explore the famous Jam Factory craft and design studios.

We finish the day at the opulent Torbreck, to sample their blockbuster wines.  We’ll show you some of the oldest vines on the planet and get you into the winery to see where the magic happens.

Today, if you want to up the ante you can pay a little extra to taste a 100-year-old tawny or Torbreck’s famous 100 point 2005 first ever vintage of ‘The Laird’.

Dinner tonight is at the earthy and charming Greenock Pub, local hangout for the region’s winemakers and vignerons.  The surroundings are the perfect opportunity to catch-up with one of our winemaker mates for a casual tasting over dinner.  We also encourage guests to bring an interesting bottle from their personal cellar to include in a game of ‘wine options’.

Day 3: Australian wines most famous drop

The morning on Day 3 is your time. We can arrange a bike ride, a few holes of golf or a walk in the stunning Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park.  We can also make arrangements if you want to squeeze in one more tasting with us. If you have a particular preference we can arrange, or you can let us surprise you!

We are then back to Adelaide for lunch, more specifically global icon Penfolds Magill Estate for an exclusive Grange and friends tasting, a behind-the-scenes tour of the historic site and a long lunch. This is the perfect place to lose an afternoon!

Tonight you will stay at Adelaide’s most exclusive Eos Hotel, dining on Peel street at the Clever Little Tailor for tapas and matching wines. Following dinner, we can explore the eclectic mix of bars and clubs in the surrounding laneways.

Day 4: Adelaide

Start your last day with breakfast at Eos and then the day is yours until we transfer you to your flights. To get your imagination flowing, we can organise an exclusive fitting at RM Williams, a tour of the historic Adelaide Central Markets, a roof-top climb and wine tasting at Adelaide Oval or a visit to an Opal merchant or a Haigh’s Chocolates store.

frequently asked questions

I’m not into wine as much as my partner, will I still enjoy the experience?

keyboard_arrow_down

We think so. Obviously, the focus of this experience is on wine, however there is more to wine than just tasting. At the heart of the trip is the stories, beautiful landscapes, incredible characters, and the local produce (apart from the wine!). We have also tailored the trip to include time for activities outside of the vineyards and wineries, including options for bushwalking, shopping, cycling or pampering.

How many wines will we get to taste and what wine is included for lunch and dinner.

keyboard_arrow_down

Included in the cost of the tour is a tasting at each of the 6 winery/vineyard destinations. Each tasting will encompass a minimum of 4 wines, but typically many more. Where possible we have have worked with the venue managers to organise a selection of matching wines for each of the courses which works out to be the equivalent of between $75-$100/per person. There is, of course, always the opportunity to select and purchase additional wines to add to the table.

What sort of wines will we experience?

keyboard_arrow_down

It is our mission to expose you to iconic Australian wines, some of which you already know and love as well as hidden gems. Where possible and available we will include back vintages and barrel tastings. Given this trip is based in the Barossa, you can expect Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet blends, Rhone-style blends, Riesling, Viognier and Semillon as well as emerging varieties such as Montepulciano, Grenache Blanc and Albarino.

Can we purchase wines on the tour and can you arrange delivery of any purchased wines to my home?

keyboard_arrow_down

Yes and yes. Most wineries will be able to arrange delivery direct from their facilities, but it this is not possible then we can arrange for you at your expense.

Will the weather effect activities?

keyboard_arrow_down

We have contingencies that accommodate all weather, rest assured your experience your will not be impacted by poor weather.

Can I speak to someone about this trip?

keyboard_arrow_down

We would love to speak with you about this trip, and answer any questions you might have! Contact our friendly team on (+61) 1300 590 838.
You will be speaking to a wonderful, actual human from Airguides. We pride ourselves on the personal service that we give, from the moment you begin planning your holiday, to the journey home!

Scenic Drive to Launceston

On the drive to Launceston, duck into the town of Tunbridge, where the convict-built 1848 Blackman River Bridge is Australia's oldest wooden span bridge. Admire Tunbridge Manor, one of three coaching inns that once served the town. Today it's a stately private residence. Hit Ross in time for lunch at one of its two bakeries. Bakery 31 is famed for its scallop pies, while Ross Village Bakery is known for its “world’s greatest” vanilla slice. Tasmania's merino industry began in the Midlands around Ross in the 1830s and is celebrated in the Tasmanian Wool Centre, which features a re-created shearing shed, galleries and one of the state's largest retail areas dedicated to woollens.

Free Option

Ross Bridge

The town of Ross is the perfect size to explore on foot. Stroll past the red phone boxes on the main street and pick up the phone to listen to audio stories of the town's history. Ross Bridge, built in 1836 by convicts, spans the Macquarie River. The 186 carvings on Australia's third-oldest bridge were considered so exquisite that the stonemasons were issued free pardons. End your walk at the Ross Female Factory Historic Site, a probation station for female convicts and their babies in the mid-19th century. It's one of four female factories built in Tasmania, and regarded as the most archaeologically intact female convict site in Australia.

Optional

Discover Brickendon

Brickendon is one of Tasmania's oldest farming properties, settled in 1824 by William Archer. In 2010, Brickendon Estate along with its neighbouring property, Woolmers Estate were listed jointly as a World Heritage Site being part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property. We highly recommend a stop in Brickendon to experience the remarkable rural landscape, magnificent heritage gardens, amazing collection of convict constructed buildings, family history and memorabilia.
