Guided trip

The Story

The waters off East Timor are one of the last places on earth where blue whales move through ocean that feels genuinely untouched. They come here to feed, following deep currents along a coastline that most travellers never reach. This trip puts you in the water with them.

Limited to seven guests and guided by acclaimed underwater photographer Caine Delacy, the week is built around daily ocean encounters. You move by boat along East Timor's remote coastline, scanning for the long, low exhale that gives them away, then slipping into the water when conditions are right. Blue whales are the largest animals that have ever lived. Nothing prepares you for the scale of them up close.

Beyond the water, the days settle into something quieter. Small group meals, evenings spent unwinding, conversations with people who've just shared something they'll struggle to explain to anyone who wasn't there. Caine works with each guest on their underwater photography: approach, timing, light. Whether you're picking up a camera for the first time or refining a skill you've been building for years.

East Timor itself is worth the journey. The coastline is raw, the culture is warm, and the waters are some of the least-dived in the region. But the blue whales are why you come, and an encounter with one stays with you long after you surface.

What Fuels Caine

“The ocean’s been my passion since day one. Photography lets me dive deeper, sharing the untold stories of its inhabitants and the world they thrive in.”

Caine didn't come to photography through adventure or adrenaline. He came through science. Years of studying marine ecosystems showed him that data alone doesn't change minds, but images do. Running expeditions gave him a way to share the wonders he'd spent his career studying, and to help others see the ocean the way a scientist does: with awe, and with urgency. He now lives in landlocked Colorado, which only makes the pull of the sea stronger.

When whales are found, Caine leads you into the water. These are the largest animals that have ever lived. Nothing you've seen before will prepare you for the scale of them up close.

Dinners at the resort or in town. Free time in the late afternoon each day.

Late afternoons are yours. Evenings are a mix of dinners at the resort and one night at a local restaurant.

Who is this trip for?

Anyone that wants to spend time with blue whales! You do need to be able to swim confidently and be comfortable with snorkelling. We will be out in open water, swimming 100 metres to and from the whales each day.

Do I need to be a photographer?

No! This trip is open to everyone, you just need to be a confident swimmer. Our main focus is on spending time with the whales, and appreciating being in the water with them. Being able to take photos of them is just a bonus! There will be a photography and videography workshop, but these are completely optional.

Are we guaranteed to see whales?

This is nature, and it is wild. The whales are there every year. But I can't make guarantees! There is no guarantee for how the interactions will be. You can't guarantee anything in nature. We want to experience these animals in the wild, that's what makes it so special!

What should I bring?
  • Rash vest or thermal top although water is around 28-30°C
  • Mask
  • Snorkel
  • Fins
  • Rain jacket (waterproof/windproof shell)
  • Camera!
Who leads the trip?

Every Airguides expedition has two leaders: an Airguides trip leader who handles logistics and keeps everything running smoothly, and a storyteller guide - in this case Caine Delacy who brings his extensive knowledge of photography and these majestic animals. Our storytellers are photographers, filmmakers, scientists and explorers - people who have dedicated their careers to understanding these places, and who share that perspective with guests throughout the trip.

What fitness level is needed?

For our ocean adventures, a moderate level of fitness is ideal to fully enjoy water-based activities like swimming, snorkelling, or diving, often lasting several hours. Being comfortable in the ocean is essential. If you have concerns about your fitness level or abilities in the water, please don't hesitate to contact us for advice.

Is there a solo traveller supplement?

Yes. Solo travellers can request a private room for an additional fee of US$3,000. We also offer a roommate pairing option on a limited, first-come-first-served basis. Contact us for details and availability.

Can I speak to someone about this trip or get help with flights?

Yes. Our team can help with flight options and travel routing. Call, text or WhatsApp us at +61 402 552 918. You'll speak directly with an Airguides team member who knows this trip inside out. We're here to help with any questions, big or small, from planning your adventure to arriving back home.

A truly unique experience that you will cherish for the rest of your life.

This experience is not for the faint of heart or someone who is looking for Instagram moments for clout. You are being given a unique opportunity to go to a place that will only be accessible to a handful of mere mortals.

To be in the presence of a unique visionary like Martin Gregus is truly a once in a lifetime.

The Airguides trip to Tonga to swim with humpback whales was the experience of a lifetime. I have traveled all over the world, and nothing compares to being in the wild, rustic, deep blue waters of the South Pacific while interacting with whales and their calves. A wonderful and caring team made our adventures stress free.
