Travel with award-winning photographer and filmmaker Karim Iliya to Mexico’s Magdalena Bay, where ocean predators gather in a high-speed hunt unlike anything else on Earth.
Each year, striped marlin, sea lions, and seabirds converge here to hunt vast bait balls of sardines in a spectacular feeding frenzy. It’s fast. It’s raw. And it’s one of the most cinematic underwater events on the planet.
You’ll be out on the water each day with Karim and a local captain, scanning the blue for signs of action. When the moment comes, you’ll slip into the water with snorkel gear and witness the chaos firsthand: marlin slicing through shoals, sea lions diving in formation, and bait balls swirling like galaxies. Sometimes, you’ll be at the centre of it.
But this isn’t just about adrenaline. It’s about perspective. Karim will guide you through the action with calm expertise, offering one-on-one support in photography, storytelling, and underwater ethics. Whether you're an experienced shooter or picking up a camera for the first time, you’ll leave with sharper skills, a deeper respect for ocean predators, and a hard drive full of moments you’ll never forget.
Evenings are spent in a peaceful coastal lodge, sharing meals, stories, and photo reviews with a small group of travellers who came for more than just a thrill. They came to see the ocean through the eyes of a storyteller.
Karim Iliya is an acclaimed wildlife photographer, filmmaker, and conservationist whose work offers a rare glimpse into the lives of Earth’s most extraordinary creatures. From swimming with whales to capturing volcanic eruptions from the air, his images have appeared in National Geographic, BBC Earth, and other leading publications.
Karim brings more than technical mastery. He brings heart. His approach blends artistic vision with deep respect for the natural world, using storytelling to build empathy and awareness for fragile ecosystems and their inhabitants.
As your guide and mentor, Karim will be with you in the water and behind the lens, sharing his insights on both photography and the wildlife you encounter. Whether you’re a seasoned shooter or just starting out, you’ll learn to capture meaningful images and walk away with a deeper connection to the ocean and its wild residents.
Travelling with Karim means more than just documenting beauty — it means bearing witness to it, and being inspired to protect it.
Your journey into the wild begins
We’ll meet in La Paz around midday and begin the scenic drive to Puerto San Carlos (approx. 4 hours). From there, a short boat ride (30–40 minutes) will take us across the bay to Magdalena Island, our base for the week.
Once on the island, we’ll settle into our safari-style tents, share a relaxed dinner, and gather for a trip briefing to prepare for the days ahead.
Note: This is the first official day of your trip. We recommend flying to La Paz International Airport (LAP) or Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) the day before.
Offshore safari in the heart of the action
After an early breakfast, we’ll head out for a full day on the water. Our local captain and Karim will be scanning for signs of activity — striped marlin, sea lions, and other marine life drawn to the sardine bait balls.
When the moment comes, we’ll slip into the water for carefully managed encounters, always on the animals’ terms. Expect high-energy moments, unforgettable views, and plenty of time in the water.
In the afternoon, we’ll return to camp to relax before gathering for dinner at the Palapa, where we’ll share stories and review the day’s highlights.
Return to La Paz
After breakfast, we’ll depart between 7:00–8:00 AM for the journey back to La Paz (approx. 4 hours).
If you’re flying from San José del Cabo (SJD), we recommend booking flights after 4:00 PM, or staying an extra night to enjoy a more relaxed departure. Our friendly team is happy to advise — just reach out.
Note: This is the final day of your trip.
“Photography lets me see the Earth in a new way, where I take my time looking at the details that you don’t usually see"
Optional Extras:
Each day is different. The waters off Magdalena Bay are home to striped marlin, sea lions, and a variety of other marine life during the sardine run. Encounters may be brief — a flash of marlin in the blue — or longer, with bait balls forming and predators feeding in view. All interactions are on the animals’ terms, and we follow strict in-water guidelines to ensure they remain ethical and respectful.
We spend five full days on the water, with the aim of entering the water when conditions and wildlife behaviour allow. The number and length of encounters can vary depending on weather, visibility, and animal activity.
This trip is limited to a maximum of 5 guests (plus captain & crew), keeping the experience intimate and giving everyone more time in the water.
Sometimes the action is right beside the boat, requiring minimal swimming. Other times, we may swim calmly toward a bait ball. You don’t need to be an elite swimmer, but you should be confident snorkelling in open water. The boat is always nearby if you need a break.
While the focus is on striped marlin, sardine bait balls, and sea lions, we may also encounter dolphins, whales, rays, and seabirds.
In November, water temperatures are usually around 27–29°C (80–85°F), with visibility averaging 10–15 metres. A 3–5 mm wetsuit is recommended for comfort.
Yes. Please bring your own mask, snorkel, fins, and wetsuit. If you need gear recommendations, our team is happy to help.
We stay in safari-style tents on Magdalena Island, with shared occupancy as standard. Tents are clean, safe, and comfortable. Private tent upgrades may be available on request.
Yes — all meals are included. Breakfast is served daily at camp, with packed lunches and snacks provided on the boat, and dinners enjoyed together in the evenings. Please let us know in advance if you have any dietary restrictions or allergies.
Fly into La Paz International Airport (LAP) or Los Cabos International Airport (SJD). The trip starts and ends in La Paz, with overland and boat transfers to Magdalena Island included.
The Pacific coast of Baja California has a mild, arid-subtropical climate. Average highs are around 33°C/91°F and lows 22°C/72°F. Conditions on the water can feel cooler due to wind and open-ocean exposure.
The official currency is the Mexican peso. Most businesses accept major credit cards, but small vendors may prefer cash.
Visas are not required for citizens of the US, UK, or EU countries. Please check your individual entry requirements before travel.
Please ensure you are up to date on your routine vaccinations. Check official health advice for any additional recommendations for travel to Mexico.

Every Airguides trip is led by two key people:
Our Storytellers aren’t just guides — they’re marine biologists, photographers, filmmakers, or other experts who offer a unique window into the world you’re exploring.
Airguides trips are small, shared adventures — usually with 6–12 guests, depending on the trip. You’ll be travelling with an inspiring Storyteller Guide, an Airguides Trip Leader, and a mix of like-minded people: solo travellers, couples, and friends from all over the world.
These trips tend to attract curious, open-minded people who care about nature, stories, and exploring with purpose. You don’t need to be an expert — just up for the experience.
Most trips are for guests aged 18+, but occasionally we welcome younger travellers if the trip is a good fit. For example, confident swimmers may be able to join in-water trips with prior approval. Just reach out if you're not sure!
Pack the camera gear you're most comfortable with! Whether you prefer DSLRs or a simple smartphone setup with a waterproof case, our Storyteller Guides are skilled in various underwater photography techniques. For those interested in diving deep into photo editing, we suggest bringing a laptop with Adobe Lightroom installed. If you have any specific questions or need advice on gear, feel free to reach out to us.
Solo travellers can opt for a private room, which incurs a single-supplement fee. Please contact us for specific pricing details. Alternatively, we may offer a roommate pairing option on a limited, first-come, first-served basis. Reach out to us for availability and more information.
We'd love to chat with you about this trip and answer any questions you have! Feel free to call, text or WhatsApp our friendly team at +61 402 552 918. You’ll be speaking with a real person from the Airguides team who knows this trip inside out. We’re here to help with any questions, big or small, and we’ll support you every step of the way — from planning your adventure to arriving back home.

Jono Allen is an amazing, talented photographer who created a special group experience. The WHALES were mind blowing. What a gift to be in Tonga staring into the eye of a baby whale! This trip was a lifelong dream come true. I highly recommend it so much we’ve already signed up again for next year!"

I have traveled all over the world, and nothing compares to being in the wild, rustic, deep blue waters of the South Pacific while interacting with whales and their calves. A wonderful and caring team made our adventures stress free. Absolutely amazing, so much so, that I am doing it again this year! Thanks a million Paul, Jono, Al, Alistair, Christian and Polly!"
